How You Can Help The Jimmy Pratt Memorial Soup Kitchen @ George Street United Church:

·        Get a group of friends together from your work, group or team etc. and arrange to come down to The Outreach Centre on a
Thursday mornings to help prepare the soup for the Friday Soup Kitchen, one of our ‘chief chefs and bottle-washers’ will show
you the ropes!

·        Volunteer your time to serve the patrons and clean up at the Soup Kitchen on Fridays, 8:45am – 1:00pm

·        If you have skills to teach computer and internet use, our patrons would like to learn basic skills.

·        Make donations to the Outreach Programs at George Street United Church. Remember a loved one or celebrate a special birthday
by feeding the hungry ($75 for food, $375 for full operation of the Soup Kitchen). Tax receipts provided for donations of $20 or more.

·        Great idea for high school students needing volunteer hours: school group/team or parent and student volunteer for an
hour before Mile One Centre events as Parking Lot Volunteers (on the lot located on George Street West). Collecting money for
parking in the church lot on one evening has the potential to raise $150 for Outreach at our church….that’s soup to feed 200 people!

                                         Volunteers are always needed and appreciated!

                                             Let us know if you would like to volunteer.

Leave your name and contact information and how you would like to help and we will be happy to follow up

                                                                or you can contact our Office at 726-8775.

THE OUTREACH MINISTRIES OF GEORGE STREET UNITED CHURCH

Each Friday throughout the year, George Street United Church offers a hot lunch to those individuals in the downtown core of St. John's who are less fortunate.   This service is available at George Street, thanks to a very generous gift from Kathleen (Pratt) LeGrow, as a memorial to her brother, and through other corporate donations and sponsorship.  One of our major sponsors, who have supported the outreach centre since its beginning, is Manna European Bakery &  Deli.

Since the "Jimmy Pratt Memorial Outreach Centre" opened its doors for the first time on Sunday, 23 December 2001, its success has been in no small part thanks to the efforts of a small group of dedicated volunteers from George Street and other St. John's Congregations.

The work of  the Outreach Team, under the direction of our Chairperson Frank Norman, begins on Monday mornings when our volunteers  fan out across the City to collect donations from our various community-minded Corporate Sponsors.  Once the donations are brought to the Outreach Centre, they are sorted and packaged for the Friday meal and also into small food hampers that are distributed to the less fortunate who visit our centre on Friday.

On Thursday, our volunteers meet at the Outreach Centre to prepare the Friday meal.  This work involves peeling vegetables and preparing soups, stews or chilli.  This work sometimes takes 4 to 5 hours.

On Friday's the "Jimmy Pratt Memorial Outreach Centre" is open from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and during this period, the Centre often serves up to 100 meals.  In addition to the meal, our volunteers spend some time with the centre visitors in conversation and fellowship.   If they so choose, the visitors can also spend some time in our "Friendship Corner" where they can relax and watch some TV or a video and perhaps even spend a little time "surfing the internet".

Volunteer’s Creed

Though my battles and my worries
Are sometimes all that I can see,
Still I always must remember;
Life’s not only about me.

Other souls are also hurting,
And I know that it’s God’s plan,
To reach out to help another;
To extend to them my hand.

With this purpose as my focus,
To be a comfort to a friend,
All my troubles and my worries
Seem to fade out in the end.

It is one of God’s true lessons,
How my walk is meant to be;
True happiness I find
When life’s not only about me.
